Spedy vs. Trello

Trello is Kanban at its simplest. Spedy is Kanban + wiki + time tracking + AI coding agent for software teams that have outgrown Trello.

The verdict

Trello is excellent when you’re just starting out or when your team has no tooling budget. But once you build software seriously, you hit the limits: no sprints, no releases, no first-class Git integration, no wiki. Trello Power-Ups patch the gap, but each costs extra. Spedy bundles all of that from the start, plus GDPR hosting in Germany and an AI coding agent. If your team picked Trello "for the simplicity" but keeps reaching for more features — switch.

Where each tool wins

Both products are good. They just play in different leagues, depending on your region, stack philosophy, and workflow.

Spedy is strong when …

  • Kanban + wiki + time tracking + releases — no Power-Up needed
  • Engineering-first: Git integration, pipeline view, sprint mechanics
  • AI coding agent included — Trello has no equivalent
  • GDPR-native, EU hosting, DPA included by default
  • As fast to learn as Trello — but grows with you

Trello is strong when …

  • Simplest possible Kanban — onboarding in 30 seconds
  • Very generous free plan (10 boards / workspace)
  • Power-Up marketplace for special use cases
  • Established since 2011 — almost everyone knows Trello
  • Atlassian integration (Jira, Confluence) when already in place

How to choose

Pick Spedy if:

  • You’re outgrowing Trello — need sprints, releases, wiki
  • Your team builds software (5+ developers)
  • EU/DACH with GDPR requirements
  • You’ve added 3+ Trello Power-Ups and noticed the per-piece pricing adds up

Pick Trello if:

  • Your team is small (1-3 people, simple list/board is enough)
  • You don’t need engineering tooling (personal projects, hobby)
  • Your team knows Trello and doesn’t want switching cost
  • You want the free tier to last as long as possible without paying

Frequently asked questions

Isn’t Spedy too complex for a Trello team?
If your team is happy with pure Trello workflow — no, then Spedy is overkill and you should stick with Trello. But if your team already adds Power-Ups (Sprint, Time-Tracking, Calendar), it has already left the "Trello is simple" zone. In that case Spedy isn’t more complex, just more honest: all features included instead of pieced together.
Can we migrate from Trello?
Trello provides a per-board JSON export. Cards (= tickets in Spedy) and lists (= status) can be imported from there. Power-Up-specific data (custom fields, sprints) may need to be remodeled. We help with setup at no cost.
What about our Trello Power-Ups?
The most common Power-Ups (time tracking, sprints, calendar, wiki, custom fields) are all built into Spedy. Specialty Power-Ups (e.g., industry-specific CRMs) have no direct Spedy replacement — check our integrations list or contact us for your specific use case.
We have 50 boards in Trello. Will that overwhelm us?
It depends: 50 boards = 50 projects. In Spedy, each board maps to its own Spedy board. If the 50 are truly separate projects, it’s the same in Spedy. But if you have 50 boards because you organize without filters/sub-issues, you can work more efficiently in Spedy with fewer boards + better filter/tag structure.
How does the cost compare when switching?
Trello Free → Spedy Free: free (note Spedy’s 1-user limit on Free). Trello Standard ($5) → Spedy Pro (€9): slightly more, but all Power-Ups included. If you’ve already booked 2-3 Trello Power-Ups (~$4 each), switching to Spedy is usually cheaper or breakeven.
